Petrojet
Established in 1975, Petrojet is a wholly Egyptian-owned company that has become a leading force in the petroleum sector, both domestically and internationally. Originally focused on contracting, procurement, and construction within Egypt, Petrojet began expanding globally in 2002 and is now active all across the Arab world and Africa.
The company is renowned for its expertise in petroleum-related projects, including the construction of pipelines, stations, and marine platforms, in addition to its contributions to the development of critical infrastructure, tunnels, and roads projects.
Behind Petrojet's remarkable success lies a compelling narrative, one that we were privileged to explore in a conversation with Engineer Mohamoud Megahed, Assistant Chairman for Equipment and Maintenance at Petrojet. In our exclusive interview, Engineer Megahed provided valuable insights into Petrojet's journey to success and highlighted the key role Komatsu has played as a trusted partner along the way.
Petrojet's Pillars of Success: Investing in People and Machinery
At the core of Petrojet’s enduring success is a strategic investment in its people and equipment, as highlighted by Engineer Mohamoud Megahed. With a workforce of around 44,000, Petrojet's employees are the heart of the company and its greatest asset, bringing expertise, qualifications, and efficiency to every project.
Complementing this human capital is Petrojet’s state-of-the-art fleet of over 11,000 pieces of equipment, including cranes, bulldozers, excavators, and more. Maintained to the highest standards by skilled teams, this advanced machinery allows Petrojet to execute projects with maximum efficiency, reliability, and productivity.
These dual strengths enable Petrojet to deliver successful projects across Egypt and the region, from metro lines and fertilizer plants domestically, to expansive pipeline networks in the UAE and Saudi Arabia’s NEOM development.
Amidst this success, Komatsu has emerged as a reliable partner in Petrojet’s journey. “We have been working with Komatsu and its agent, Egyptian International Motors (EIM), in Egypt for nearly 40 years,” Engineer Megahed emphasized. “Komatsu equipment is integral to our projects due to its durability and low breakdown rate.”
However, machinery and skilled employees alone would not suffice without reliable technical support and readily available spare parts. Petrojet has been able to maximize the performance of its equipment thanks to the reliable after-sales support it received throughout its decades-long partnership with Komatsu. “The customer support Komatsu offers in terms of technical support and the availability of spare parts gives us a competitive advantage by reducing downtime, increasing productivity, and ensuring our ability to consistently deliver on demanding projects,” Engineer Megahed concluded.
Komatsu Durable Machinery Meeting Petrojet’s Challenging Projects
As a leading contractor handling immense infrastructure projects across diverse geographies, Petrojet places the highest demands on its equipment fleet. Machines must be able to withstand exposure to varying climates as well as rigorous applications such as earthworks, pipelaying, rock crushing, and drilling.
It is in this context, Komatsu machinery has proven it is uniquely suited to meet Petrojet's rigorous performance requirements, according to Engineer Megahed. “Komatsu equipment, particularly its range of earthmoving and excavating solutions, demonstrates the heavy-duty durability needed to optimize productivity on challenging job sites,” he stressed. “Our inventory includes around 240 Komatsu machines, each perfectly tailored to meet the demanding needs of our operations and support intensive utilization.”
Looking ahead, Engineer Megahed stressed that, with Komatsu's strong support network both inside and outside Egypt, Petrojet will continue relying on Komatsu to successfully implement massive projects through their collaborative partnership.
Komatsu and EIM Collaborative After-Sales Support
Reliable after-sales service is a critical priority for Petrojet given the immense scale of its infrastructure projects. According to Engineer Megahed, Komatsu and EIM prioritize rapid issue resolution and have established with Petrojet an effective partnership focused on maximizing equipment uptime through responsive maintenance solutions.
In regard to this, Engineer Megahed highlighted that EIM operates a maintenance training center that Petrojet's technical staff can access for advice and information exchange. This enables the company’s internal experts to quickly solve minor issues, preserving productive hours. “Should assistance be needed, EIM also has qualified field service engineers on standby to provide on-site support,” he added.
Such collaborative customer support optimizes fleet efficiency - a key success factor for Petrojet as it delivers massive projects amid tight schedules.
Komatsu and Petrojet: Partnering for a Sustainable Future
Both Petrojet and Komatsu share a joint vision of enabling sustainable infrastructure development in Egypt and beyond. According to Engineer Megahed, the country's plans in the coming period are focused on transitioning to green fuels and reducing carbon emissions, a vision that Komatsu has aligned with for many years through its leadership in pioneering manufacturing technologies that consider sustainability.
He highlighted that Komatsu's durable machinery helps Petrojet maximize resource efficiency over the long run, lowering operating costs by reducing fuel usage and maintenance needs, which maximize productivity while minimizing environmental impacts.
He expressed confidence in Komatsu's quality, saying, “Komatsu machinery exemplifies the Japanese manufacturing qualities. We would undoubtedly recommend Komatsu equipment to other companies.”
